The West Somerset Railway has succeeded in delivering some of the most challenging restorations completed by any heritage railway and to build on this expertise, is recruiting for the role of Head of Mechanical Engineering.

The Head of Mechanical Engineering is a member of our senior management team and reports to the General Manager. We offer a competitive salary with a non-contributory pension scheme. He/She will be responsible for all aspects of restoration, overhaul and maintenance of locomotives, carriages and wagons. The jobholder must balance engineering needs, the availability of people, machines and finance to deliver the overhauls required, whilst maintaining the operational fleet to meet the needs of the Railway throughout the year. The jobholder is responsible for ensuring that the requirements of legislation and standards (both internal and external) applicable to heritage railways are met.

Whilst there is a small core team of employees, volunteer staffing is essential to the achievement of the Railway’s engineering goals. Future plans envisage greater employment of volunteers wherever possible and the Head of Mechanical Engineering will be responsible for maximising the use of volunteers. Experience of managing in a volunteer organisation is very desirable. We are looking for someone who can offer experience of: managing or project managing mechanical engineering or manufacturing activities; leading change and managing teams.

The successful applicant should possess relevant qualifications and training (Apprenticeship/HNC/HND/Degree), preferably with Chartered Mechanical Engineer status, and a background in manufacturing or engineering with a minimum 10 years relevant experience post qualification. Blue Anchor Stationmaster Vacancy

The West Somerset Railway is seeking applications for the volunteer post of Blue Anchor Station Master. As one of Britain’s leading Heritage Railway’s the position will put the successful candidate at the forefront of customer care.

The Station Master is responsible for the functioning of the Station and Ticket Office, ensuring the Station is clean and tidy and presents a positive image of the railway to visitors and managing the station staff working there. The post also includes liaison between other station master and friends of groups.
