Commercial Officer  

We are seeking a Commercial Officer to work in its busy office at Minehead Station. The work will include assisting with group bookings, helping to arrange special events and generally promoting the products and services offered by one of Britain’s premier heritage railways.

The ideal candidate will be a team player, with a positive ‘can do’ attitude, who is at ease communicating with both customers and staff. They should be flexible and adaptable and willing to work under their own initiative

 Competency in IT is required, as is the ability to prioritise work. A good standard of written work and numeracy is also required.

This is a full time permanent position, with normal weekday working of 9am to 5pm. Some  weekend working and flexibility will be required to suit the needs of the business.

Head of Finance

With the retirement of our Chief Accountant early next year we are seeking a suitably experienced and professionally qualified accountant to head the Finance function within the Company.

You will be responsible to the General Manager for managing the financial accounts, tax and ensuring effective financial controls of the WSR plc business. With an annual turnover of around £3m and 50 employees, effective financial systems and controls are key to the success to the on-going success of the Company.

You will liaise with the Finance Director and support him in developing budgets in line with the remit set annually by the Board, with responsibility for preparing financial accounts and reporting on financial performance to the Board.

As a senior manager you will be expected to develop close working relationships with other Heads of Department, to represent the function on management forums and to liaise with external bodies as necessary.

This is a permanent `full-time equivalent` post based at our Minehead offices.

Inward Investment Manager

Would you like to be at the forefront of securing major funds for the development of the West Somerset Railway?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a well motivated ambitious individual to join the West Somerset Railway PLC on a voluntary basis as the new Inward Investment Manager. The Railway is in the process of preparing plans for a number of exciting new developments which are intended to sustain and enhance its reputation as one of the U.K.’s premier heritage railway and tourist and leisure attractions.

We are looking for somebody with the necessary skills, expertise and understanding to lead the work on acquiring significant resources to fund a range of projects across the Railway. Although the post would be employed and accountable to the PLC, the individual appointed will work across the family of organisations involved in the West Somerset Railway together with our partners in local authorities, the business community and the heritage railway network.

Major schemes at Bishops Lydeard and Williton are in development together with a number of other smaller but challenging projects including locomotive and carriage restoration, museum development and heritage infrastructure.

Strategic Project Manager

How would you like to help create the new strategic engineering centre at Williton?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a well motivated ambitious individual to join the West Somerset Railway PLC on a voluntary basis as the new Project Manager for the proposed strategic engineering centre at Williton. This is a partnership approach with a number of railway organisations on the WSR. The intention is to both enhance the engineering capacity, activity range and scope of the facilities at Williton together with developing the attractiveness and appeal of Williton station as a genuine example of Brunel infrastructure in a country branch line setting.

We are looking for somebody with the necessary skills, expertise and understanding to lead the work to develop and oversee the project on an operational basis. The person concerned will preferably, but not necessarily have an engineering background but must be able to demonstrate evidence of project management experience in relation to capital schemes.

Although the post would be employed and accountable to the PLC, the individual appointed will work across the family of organisations involved in the West Somerset Railway at Williton together with our partners in local authorities, the business community and the heritage railway network.

Committee Administrator

This volunteer role is within the team to support the Director Governance and the Corporate Services Administrator in the management and application of committee governance across the PLC. In particular you will prepare agenda and organise papers for plc committees and annual general and stakeholder meetings. You will act as Minute Secretary and assist the Chairman on follow up actions from meetings. 

You should be computer literate and organised with an ability to effectively communicate with others at all levels.

HR Advisor

We wish to recruit a suitably experienced and ideally IPD qualified volunteer to join the professional HR team. You will have regular contact with managers and staff at all levels providing advice and guidance on staffing and staff relations issues.

The team operates on a flexible basis with mutual support and individual members leading on specific HR issues. Workload may vary but the commitment averages around one day per week.

Blue Anchor Stationmaster Vacancy

The West Somerset Railway is seeking applications for the volunteer post of Blue Anchor Station Master. As one of Britain’s leading Heritage Railway’s the position will put the successful candidate at the forefront of customer care.

The Station Master is responsible for the functioning of the Station and Ticket Office, ensuring the Station is clean and tidy and presents a positive image of the railway to visitors and managing the station staff working there. The post also includes liaison between other station master and friends of groups.
