Filming & Photo Shoots on the West Somerset Railway

Filming & Photoshoots on the West Somerset Railway  (2015 season)

The West Somerset Railway provides some of the best opportunities for film making and photography on offer in the UK’s heritage steam sector and a warm welcome is assured.

With a choice of ten different stations the former Great Western Railway branch line offers complete diversity from a busy terminus with turntable at Minehead to quiet country stations where time has stood still for a century like Stogumber, or busy passing points at Crowcombe Heathfield. The line has a variety of backdrops including seaside, as at Blue Anchor, fields and open country as at Williton or historical backdrop such as Dunster Station.

There are also several old-fashioned railway crossings with gates together with their modern equivalents, semaphore signals, signal boxes, steep-sided cuttings, bridges, forest glades, rolling hills and valleys.

The home fleet of locomotives offer both Great Western and Midland Railway authenticity and range from small tank engines to express passenger locomotives.

The WSR also offers a wide variety of freight wagons in authentic livery and coaches which go back to the British Railways era.

So, if you need a bespoke train at your disposal, at a time to suit you, the WSR will oblige. We can also supply a list of days where there are no normal passenger services, with your train hire catering for all your needs. These days are normally over the period October to March which provides the best visual effect from the locomotive with a lower sun highlighting the smoke and steam in cooler weather.

Catering can be negotiated to ensure your crew are kept refreshed.

The WSR team will advise on all safety considerations for photography and filming on or near the railway line.

For an additional fee, we can provide a chaperone to assist which will require a minimum of three weeks notice to arrange.

For an informal discussion or to book your trip, please ring 01643 704996 and speak to the Commercial  Team or email info@wsrail.net and we’ll get back to you.
