The Brendon Hills Iron Mines and the West Somerset Mineral Railway book by M.H. Jones is available now for purchase from the West Somerset Railway's 'Buffer Stop Shop' at Minehead Station.
It is over 4 decades since David and Charles published Roger Sellick’s history of the West Somerset Mineral Railway, which also included information about the Iron Ore mining which took place on the Brendon Hills and provided the raison d’etre for the Mineral Railway’s existence. The Sellick book is long out of print and a good quality edition bought from a dealer will damage the bank balance more than somewhat.
Now there is a new book published. Written by Michael Jones and published by Lightmoor Press in conjunction with the Exmoor National Park Authority it weighs in at 416 pages and is fully illustrated with maps, photographs, line drawings and production tables throughout its length. The sheer amount of research that has been done is outstanding and this looks like being the definitive book on the subject for the foreseeable future. The cost is £24.99 which given the size and quality of the publication makes it actually quite close to a bargain. Copies of the book will be signed by the author at Minehead Station Bookshop on Sunday July 17th and it will be available by post by ringing 01643 700387 although the cost of p&p will be fairly hefty.
Priced at £24.99, the 416 page book can be purchased online or by calling 01643 700387.
